Akbari Darwaza, a very famous name on the lips of Lucknowites. This Darwaza mainly gives access to Chowk, Shahganj and Mahmud Nagar area. It is established in the Chowk area, which is the most populated and oldest one.
The history of Akbari Gate is captivating. It was built during the rule of Mughal Ruler Jalal-Ud-Din-Muhammad Akbar (1556-1605). He was then considered to be the most powerful and prominent emperor of the Mughal regime. His love for Lucknow was growing and it was then Akbari Darwaza was made in honor of Akbar’s first visit to the city.
Qazi Mahmud Bilgrami was appointed to construct this Darwaza. He made this astounding structure with lakhauri bricks that were used during Mughal time. Decoration with armorial fish is still a thing to watch for hours. It purely resembles Fatehpur Sikri.
After the construction of Akbari Gate, areas like Mahmud Nagar, Mansur Nagar, Fazil Nagar were founded. There was a time when the toys of Akbari Darwaza were sold. Later on, localities like Sarai, Ashrafabad, and Musharaffabad were found.
During the rule of Akbar, Akbari Darwaza was the center of all the commercial activities. Having a rich history and a golden worth this place now is suffering from lack of care. Not being maintained for years, this structure is is on the borderline of a serious downturn. Despite of being an essential part of Lucknow Heritage, it is declining day by day. Volunteering in campaigns such as protecting the heritage movements, etc, will grow a chance of their maintenance.
